Just before Christmas 2015, I was discussing potential fundraising ideas with my good friends Ed, Pete and Dani. Ed insisted that my initial proposal of periodising the challenge to do 21.1km’s worth of 5km’s in January, 10km’s in February and then build up to 1/2 marathon in March was utterly pitiful and no-one would sponsor me- so we went back to the drawing board! To be honest that idea was pretty conservative, old women run more than that recreationally on a weekly basis!! I must credit Edward with the idea of 52 half marathons in 52 weeks. We decided that the chances of me breaking physically in the first month were HIGH … and breaking mentally throughout the year: VERY HIGH. So, here are the rules of the game:
- 1 half marathon per week for every week of 2016.
- In case of injury, a long distance bike ride or swim will be put in place. Having trouble deciding on numbers for these we’ve settled on half-iron man distances as the equivalent to the half marathon so 1.3 mile swim and 56 mile bike ride.
- In case of mental breakdown, Ed will be fundraising for the cost of my care… please support him generously.
